Single-Leg Stand
Stand near a wall or sturdy surface for safety.
Lift one foot off the floor and hold your position for 20–30 seconds. Switch sides.
Your goal isn’t simply to stay upright. Pay attention to the small adjustments happening through your foot, ankle, hips, and core.
Progression: Try reaching your free leg forward, to the side, and behind you without touching the floor.
Heel-to-Toe Walk
Walk slowly in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the opposite foot.
Take 10–20 controlled steps.
This challenges your ability to maintain balance while your body is moving rather than simply standing still.
Progression: Slow the movement down even further or practice it while turning your head gently from side to side.
Step-Up to Balance
Stand in front of a low, stable step.
Step up with one foot and bring the opposite knee toward your chest. Hold the top position for two or three seconds before stepping back down.
Perform 6–10 repetitions per side.
This combines strength, coordination, and balance—the same qualities your nervous system needs when navigating stairs, curbs, trails, and everyday obstacles.
Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift
Stand on one leg with a slight bend in your knee.
Slowly hinge at your hips while extending the opposite leg behind you. Keep your spine controlled and return to standing.
Start without weight.
Once you can perform the movement with control, add a light dumbbell.
This exercise challenges your posterior chain while forcing your nervous system to stabilize your entire body on one leg.
Suitcase Carry
Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand and walk slowly while keeping your torso upright.
Don’t let the weight pull you sideways.
Walk for 20–40 seconds, then switch hands.

Progression: Increase the weight gradually or walk over a slightly more challenging surface.
Sit-to-Stand Without Using Your Hands
Sit on a sturdy chair.
Without pushing off with your hands, stand up under control. Then slowly lower yourself back down.
Perform 8–12 repetitions.
This develops lower-body strength while challenging your ability to control your center of mass—an important skill for maintaining independence as you age.

If you’re new to balance training, you don’t need to do everything at once.
Start with:
- Single-leg stand — 20–30 seconds per side
- Heel-to-toe walk — 10–20 steps
- Step-up to balance — 6–10 reps per side
- Sit-to-stand — 8–12 reps
- Suitcase carry — 20–40 seconds per side
Perform this routine two or three times per week.
